"She Built Ships" by Jeane Sloane is another winner! I loved her previous book, "She Flew Bombers: From the Factories to the Bases During World War II.This second book is more complex as it not only follows the life of a riveter, Lolly but also her friend, but also, Sumo is taken with her family to a detention camp and lastly, the book follows another friend's husband when he joins the Tuskegee Airman.
Lollie is married to Joe who has a quick temper and is very prejudiced against non-white races. She has a daughter, Edna, who can be a tattletale but also very responsible and a son, Joe who needs toilet training. Lolly is very alone except for her friend at the grocery store, Sumo. Her sister writes her but she lives too far away. Her husband is very restrictive and demanding. That is where the story starts.
I loved this book because it grabs your attention from the first sentence to the last. The author has done a tremendous amount of careful research which is reflected in her book. The story flows smoothly and the research is tucked into this story appropriately. One of my favorite parts of this book is the abundance of drawings and black and white photos which tell as the words in this book.
There is a lot to learn in this book, Victory Visitors, what it is like to weld and wear welding clothes, and most awful, the terrible Port Chicago explosion and the mistreatment of the blacks working at that facility.
I can say nothing wrong about this book. I recommend it very highly to people wanting to learn about the home front during World War II and all the other important history in this book. I am eagerly looking forward to Jeane Sloan's upcoming book, "She Was A Spy During WWII".

When I started reading this novel I could have easily read it all straight through, I was that intrigued by the simplicy of the writing and the strength of the story telling. Jeane Slone brings us another great story of the strength of women with SHE BUILT SHIPS DURING WORLD WAR II. Much like her SHE FLEW BOMBERS DURING WORLD WAR II, she shows us the backbone women developed during the war as they found they could be more than just housewives. Lolly, like many other women, finds herself caring for her two young children on her own while her husband goes off to fight in the war. When a 'Victory Visitor' comes to call on her, she finds there is a way she can support her children and her country at the same time by being trained as a welder and building ships. Her children also benefit by attending a government support preschool center which enhances their learning and playing with other children. Throughout the story Lolly comes up against predjudices and sees the strength women must develop to survive those injustices. While basked in loneliness both before her husband leaves, and while he's at sea, she finds her way through strange new feelings and decisions she makes on her own. The historical facts are enlightening.
I purchased this book at the Rose the Riveter Museum in Richmond California. It is a simple story but the historical setting is important. The author depicts life for women at the time of WWII, the prejudice against all Japanese (American-born or not) and Negroes, and how towns around U.S. shipyards grew. The growth of Richmond CA and migration of people from all over the U.S. to the area to obtain jobs is much like the days of the Gold Rush (except people were seeking jobs not gold). I was not aware of the acute labor shortage during WWII so now understand why they recruited women workers. Also interesting to learn how this time period allowed women in large numbers to enter the workforce. The book is well researched and many excellent references at the end.
A likeable story that's written very much in the style of the times, and reflects the period very well. That said - not a very captivating story, and the writing - by modern standards - isn't very good.
First book I read from this author and truly enjoy it. I am definitely going to read her other books. This book is about two wars to fight (1) in US and (2) Japan.
I bought this ebook thinking it was a novel, which is really the only genre I read these days. What a surprise it was to find myself engrossed in Jeane's story about the experiences of marginal groups such as women, Japanese-Americans and African-Americans living in the US during WWII. As one character/person remarked they were fighting two wars - one in the US and another against outside threats. Jeane's story is illustrated with photo's and backed up by references to reinforce these conditions as true and accurate. Yet at the same time it is an engaging story focused upon her main protagonist and her experience raising two kids, working as a welder building ships and maintaining friendships and a love-life while her husband served overseas.
