Madelyn Scott-Crane is a smart, 42-year-old professional mediator and single mom who's having the best sex of her life—after twenty-two months of self-imposed abstinence—inspired by the ladies of her book club, The Muffia, and the Muff’s latest racy read. But on their second date, as Maddie and her mysterious Israeli heartthrob, Udi, come together in orgasmic splendor that may or may not also be actual love, Udi collapses on top of her. Dead. When Udi’s “friends”—who resemble large appliances—arrive to claim his body, the Muffs decide that Udi had secrets, and they need to know what those secrets were. That’s when these well-read women put down their books and set out to expose the truth—whatever the dangerous truth might be. International intrigue combines with literary pursuits, lots of home-cooked food, and a little vibrator shopping. One book club, seven women with seven stories, more than seven fabulous meals and at least seven sex scenes all wrapped up in one smart, sexy novel that’s just this side of scandalous.

Finished The Muffia by Ann Royal Nicholas and gave it 5 Stars. Would recommend it to any adult as it is intelligently sex related but not too graphic. Oh, and she is a very entertaining mind to follow on any story. In this, her second novel I believe, we find a very cultured and savvy narrator who has a law degree and consorts with globe trotting film producers and other strong and successful contemporary women.I'm an artist and I appreciated the writing. It is so much better than the samples I have read from 50 Shades of Gray, plus it is not just escapist fantasy by a fan fiction person but a real plausible grabber that is handily crafted.
Ok, let's start with the the first full on sex scene. Starting on about page 122 where Madelyn, our heroine, is marveling about how her new lover is so concerned with her pleasure and making her "see the stars." Writing about sex can be tricky and awkward but this is first and foremost good writing and the subject happens to be sex in a mystery package. The only part that was confusing to me was the following: ..."Slowly coming to stand behind me, he ran his hand up my belly, palming it before taking my breasts in both hands and letting me feel his cock, hard against my ass. I pressed back with equal force, so obvious I wanted him inside me, my body begging for it. My hand reached behind me, feeling his balls, so hard from the engorged blood,..."
Alright so testicles don't harden like the rest of erectile tissue but rather are in a stable, more or less delicate state, only varying in temperature from what I understand. The storyline does involve some anecdote about a treatment that involves titanium implants in some guys sack as a cure so she goes on: " ...no titanium beads here, but soft to the touch and smooth."
Is this some reference to a future plot clue about what happens as the drama unfolds? Not to give away anything in a spoiler but this mystery is still unfolding as the very satisfying conclusion alludes to a sequel.
Looking forward to reading the next installment as she navigates the uber modern experience of an aware LA natural and deftly walks the tightrope of the sexual landscape unfolding all around her, of the young, the older and the in between.

The Muffia edition by Ann Royal Nicholas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What’s more titillating than reading a racy, steamy novel? How about engaging in racy, steamy relationships and then sharing all of the juicy, erotic details with the member gal pals of one’s book club? As the title itself suggests, this isn’t your usual rom-com chick lit, not when lead character Madelyn’s impassioned evening of unbridled lust with her latest date hits an unexpected snag; specifically, he drops dead on top of her.
Awkward.
If you were Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary, you’d simply ask your faithful lady’s maid, Anna, to help you relocate the body and simply pretend you had no idea why anyone might think you hastened his demise via too much excitement. Since this is the 21st century, however, Madelyn must summon the assistance of her literary posse and, if possible, stay one step ahead of Udi’s mysterious friends who have more than a passing interest in what, exactly, happened to the recently deceased Israeli.
With a broad spectrum of watchable female characters to keep track of, the author employs a clever device of incorporating a “cast list” in the opening pages so as to allow readers to keep track of who’s who in this sensuous, saucy romp through SoCal suburbia, international intrigue, and (literally) under-cover recreation. That her well-crafted characters are based on real women with whom the author socializes invites L.A. readers to muse whether they may have actually seen some of them in restaurants, shops or even bookstores. And what a treat for those book-loving friends to seize a piece of immortality within these fast-paced and humor-infused pages.
A fun escapist beach read where the only thing more sizzling than the sun is vicariously enjoying the adventures of women who are totally unapologetic about how much they enjoy any variation of sexual fireworks.
I honestly didn't know what to expect when I bought this book for my wife on the basis of the Godfather style font on the cover. The blurb on the back also sounded sort of fun--a story about a bunch of wacky women in a book club (my wife's in a book club). Then I started reading it on my flight home and I have to say it held my attention (I'm usually reading Malcolm Gladwell or the Wall Street Journal). The Muffia is well written and that vibrator shopping chapter cracked me up. Now I'm wondering what else my wife's book club gets up to beyond reading books.
I just loved this book. Such a great read. It really speaks to women of all ages but especially those in thier 30's and beyond. What a great surprise from a new author!
Best serious love/thriller/comfort read ever! Wish I could go back in time and be those women! Their lives are serious and dark and fun!
Loved this book. While it's not fully polished (some typos etc) its a full tilt wild ride with wonderful relatable characters..
The Muffia is a riot I really recommend this book--Ann Royal Nicholas writes in a breezy style making this the perfect beach read or to read on an airplane when you don't want anything too demanding or heavy. I couldn't help laughing out loud at the witty observations of the situations that Nicholas puts her characters in. I chose the book for my own book club and we all liked it even though a couple members of my club thought it a little too sexy. How can anything be too sexy? The Muffia is supposedly the first in a series and I can't wait to read what the smart and wacky Muff women will get up to next. I also really liked that the author and her book club are giving 10% of sales to women's causes. That's cool!
